Practice, Practice, Practice…. I’m sure this is what all of you guys hear all the time at the Dojo.
The more you practice, the better you get. I could not agree with this more!
However, after over 30 years of practice, when I look back at all the hard training on the tatami (mat) during classes, I definitely remember when my Karate suddenly became different and drastically improved.
In the old days, the only and best way to learn Karate was to go to the Dojo and attend classes as often as possible. But the technology and Youtube videos started to invade our lives to a point where it became almost overwhelming. Since we now live in an era of widespread technology that most of us have at our fingertips, it would be foolish not to use it to learn better. The day I realized the impact video had on my Dojo training, is also the time when I realized how much studying other Karate styles, but my own, can contribute to understanding Karate. When you are not at the Dojo or in your basement practicing, there are a considerable amount of quality video material on youtube that you can use to develop and consolidate your Karate knowledge. Of course there are a lot of junk material out there too, but stay aware of the differences of styles, and if you know what to look for, or even just stick to the big names, you can tremendously benefit from a lot of videos. Whether it is to look at other bunkai or figuring out the timing, breathing, of a Kata, watching these videos become an integral part of your overall Karate training. If you just think about Karate when you are at the Dojo and forget about it the minute you step out of it, it will take you forever to get to whatever goal you set for yourself.
The video I chose today is in line with what I mentioned, so here it is, a great video of Sensei Andre Bertel (Shotokan style) during one of the great workshops he gives, mainly in Europe.
